What is the P&IQ?
The P&I Qualification (P&IQ) is a rigorous, standalone professional qualification tailored for the Protection and Indemnity (P&I) industry. Developed by the International Group of P&I Clubs, the P&IQ offers valuable academic and practical knowledge for individuals currently working in or aspiring to enter the industry. The programme enhances candidates' skills and credibility among peers, managers, and clients.
Exam Schedule:
P&IQ exams are held twice a year—in May and October. Registration for the May exams opens in March. Registration for the October exams opens in August.
Who Can Take the P&IQ?
The P&IQ is open to anyone interested in the P&I industry, including:
- Club employees
- Service providers (e.g., correspondents, lawyers)
- Crew and shore staff for shipowners
No specific entry criteria are required.
P&IQ Curriculum
The P&IQ program consists of seven modules, covering the following topics:
1. The Shipping Business
2. P&I Insurance History, Operation, and Practice
3. Underwriting, Loss Prevention, and Claims Handling
4. People Risks
5. Cargo Risks
6. Collision, FFO & Pollution
7. Towage, Salvage, General Average & Wreck Removal
Qualification Levels
Candidates can earn three levels of qualifications:
P&IQ Certificate:
An introductory qualification ideal for newcomers or those seeking to enhance their existing knowledge. Achieved by completing online exams in Modules 1, 2, and 3.
P&IQ Advanced Certificate:
Builds on the knowledge gained from the P&IQ Certificate. Requires completion of online exams in Modules 4, 5, 6, and 7.
P&IQ Diploma:
The highest qualification level, consisting of a written examination (Module 8) that tests the application of knowledge in practical scenarios. Candidates must first achieve the P&IQ Certificate and Advanced Certificate.
Programme Delivery
The P&IQ is designed for self-study, removing the need for in-person training sessions.
Exams are conducted online via a secure, remotely invigilated platform, allowing candidates worldwide to take assessments conveniently from home or office. The system offers dynamic, auto-marking questions while maintaining rigorous standards.

Study Materials: After registration, you can purchase study materials for Modules 1-7 through the P&IQ Shop.
Materials are available for self-study as PDF downloads or as hard copy textbooks.
Fees:
The fee for Modules 1-7 includes access to the corresponding PDF document and one online examination per module. Resit costs only cover the cost of the exam.
The fee for Module 8 covers the cost of the written examination.
Hard copy textbooks are available for purchase.
Fees are subject to annual review and are available to view in the P&IQ Shop following registration.
